What Is the Length Comparator Used For?
Shrinkage, expansion and similar tests follow small changes in the length of a hardened specimen over days or weeks, so every reading has to be taken the same way. The top anvil is set to the specimen length, and the digital gauge is zeroed against a reference rod of matching length. The specimen is then placed between the anvil and the gauge and its reading recorded; repeating this at each test age shows how much it has grown or shortened, worked out against its original gauge length. The gauge reads to 0.001 mm, so small movements are picked up.
