What Is the Cylindrical Mould Used For?

Cylinders are a common alternative to cubes for measuring the strength of hardened concrete. The two halves of the mould are closed together on the base plate, and the mould is filled with fresh concrete and compacted; after the concrete has set, the halves are separated so the cylinder can be released without damage to its sides, and it is then cured until the test age. Tight control of the internal diameter and height means the loaded area and the shape of the specimen are known when the strength is worked out. For this cylinder mould the standards listed are BS and IS.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size of specimen does the cylindrical mould produce?
It casts a concrete cylinder 150 mm in diameter and 150 mm in height, with the mean internal diameter held within ±0.2 mm and the height within ±1 mm.

How does the mould open to release the cylinder?
The body is split vertically into two parts, so it can be opened around the set specimen and the cylinder lifted out without being forced from a closed tube.

What tolerances apply to the plates and ends?
The base plate and the top plate are both machined flat to ±0.03 mm, and the ends of the mould are machined to ±0.05.

What material is the cylinder mould made from?
The cylindrical mould is made of cast iron, and the standards listed for it are BS and IS.
