Quick Answer: A Speedy Moisture Meter is used to quickly determine the moisture content of powdered materials such as sand, soil, coal, cement and pottery slip. A fixed quantity of calcium carbide is mixed with a weighed sample in a sealed vessel fitted with a pressure gauge; the pressure generated by the acetylene gas produced is read on the gauge, which is calibrated to show moisture percentage on a wet weight basis. It is manufactured to ASTM D 4944 and AASHTO T 217 standards.
A Speedy Moisture Meter apparatus is used to quickly determine the moisture content of materials in powder form, viz. sand, soil, coal, cement, pottery slip, etc. Acetylene gas is generated when calcium carbide comes in contact with moisture. A fixed quantity of calcium carbide is mixed with a weighed quantity of the sample, and then the whole mixture is shaken well in a vessel where a pressure gauge is fixed. The pressure which is developed by the acetylene gas, produced in the vessel, is read on the pressure gauge, which is calibrated to read the moisture percentage. This instrument indicates the moisture percentage on wet weight basis, which is easily convertible to the dry weight basis. The sealing cap capacity is 6 gms; it consists of a pressure vessel with clamp. The Speedy Moisture Meter's pressure gauge is calibrated in percentage moisture content on the wet weight basis, with a Digital balance for weighing the sample and a scoop for measuring.
