Speedy Moisture Meter (code EL-STLE-10939) is an apparatus for quickly finding the moisture content of powdered materials, among them sand, soil, coal, cement and pottery slip, using the acetylene gas formed when calcium carbide meets the water in a sample. The sample and reagent are shaken with four steel balls in a 6 gms pressure vessel whose gauge, calibrated 0-50% or 0-25%, reads moisture on the wet weight basis; a digital balance and wooden carrying case are included.

What Is the Speedy Moisture Meter Used For?
Moisture content governs how soils and aggregates compact and how mixes behave, and oven drying, the usual reference method, takes many hours. The meter gives a result on the spot: the operator weighs the sample on the digital balance, places it with a scoop of calcium carbide and the steel balls in the pressure vessel, clamps the cap and shakes the vessel. The acetylene formed by the water raises the pressure, and the gauge shows the moisture directly as a percentage of wet weight, which can be converted to the dry weight basis.
