Quick Answer: The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) apparatus measures the penetration resistance of the ground by recording the number of blows ('N') needed to drive a split-spoon sampler 300 mm into the soil using a 65 kg weight falling freely through 750 mm, as per IS 2131 and IS 9640. The sampler is made from a steel tube split lengthwise and held together by a head fitted with a ball check valve and a hardened steel shoe with a cutting edge of 35 mm diameter. The sampler itself is 35 mm i.d., 50.8 mm outer diameter, and 508 mm long. It consists of three metal pipe legs, approximately 5 metres long, connected by a tie bolt; each leg is made in two parts for ease of transportation and is complete with one pulley, and one leg has a building ladder.
The Standard Penetration Test is a powerful tool for measuring the penetration resistance of the ground and relating it to the degree of compactness of cohesionless soil and the consistency of cohesive soil, and the results can be used for the design of foundations. SPT is widely used for measuring the undisturbed strength of the soil and for assessing its resistance to liquefaction due to ground vibrations caused by earthquakes or other dynamic forces. The Standard Penetration Resistance is measured as the number of blows 'N' required to drive a split-spoon sampler to a depth of 300 mm using a 65 kg weight falling freely through a height of 750 mm. One adapter to connect 'A' type drill rods is also supplied, which can be used in drilling operations to increase the footage and improve job safety.
