What Is the Standard Penetration Test Used For?
The test is made at intervals down a borehole to give a simple measure of ground strength where undisturbed sampling is difficult, particularly in sands and gravels. The legs are set up over the borehole with the pulley at the top, the split-spoon sampler is lowered on drill rods joined through the A type adapter, and the 65 kg weight is lifted and dropped freely through 750 mm. Blows are counted over 300 mm of penetration to give N, which is related to the compactness of sands and the consistency of clays for foundation design and liquefaction checks; the sampler also brings up soil for logging.
