What Is the Soil Lathe, Trimmer, Extruder Used For?
Triaxial, unconfined compression and similar soil tests need specimens that are true cylinders of set diameter and length, cut from tube samples or blocks with as little disturbance as possible. The operator stands the soil on the rotating base, clamps it with the threaded rod and turns it while shaving the sides with the trimming saw run against the two lateral guide rods, checking the diameter on the graduated slide. For the smaller sizes the trimming and extruding adapters let specimens of 35 to 50 mm diameter be trimmed or pushed out of a sampler tube.
