What Is the Alkali Aggregate Reaction Bath Used For?
Some aggregates contain reactive silica that combines with alkalis in cement to form a gel, which swells and can crack concrete. To check an aggregate, mortar bars of 25 × 25 × 285 mm are made with it and stored in the cans, in sodium hydroxide or another solution, inside the bath at the specified temperature; the bars are taken out at intervals and their length is measured, and the expansion shows whether the aggregate is potentially reactive.
