What Is the Length Gauge Elongation Gauge Used For?

An elongated particle is one whose length is large compared with its width and thickness; such particles break more easily and make a mix harder to compact, so their share in an aggregate is checked. Each particle of a sieved size fraction is offered lengthwise to the gap between the pair of studs for that fraction, and a particle that will not pass between them is elongated. The elongated particles are weighed, and their mass as a percentage of the fraction mass gives the elongation index.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Length Gauge Elongation Gauge used for?
It is used in aggregate testing to decide whether particles are elongated, by checking each particle of a size fraction against the gap between a pair of studs.

What is the gauge made of?
The base is made of hard wood, and metal studs stand vertically on it, spaced to give a separate gap for each aggregate size fraction.

How is the elongation index found?
Particles that will not pass lengthwise between the studs for their fraction are separated and weighed, and their mass is expressed as a percentage of the fraction mass.

Which standards cover the elongation gauge?
The standards listed are IS 2386 (Part-1) and BS 812, both of which include the elongation test on aggregate particles.
