What Is the Sand Equivalent Test Set Used For?
Sand containing a lot of clay or very fine dust needs more water in concrete and bonds poorly in asphalt, and the sand equivalent test gives a quick measure of how clean a sand is. A measured quantity of sand is placed in a cylinder with stock solution and shaken, preferably on a mechanical shaker; the irrigator tube, fed from the siphon assembly, then washes the fines up into suspension. After settling, the operator reads the height of the clay column on the graduated rule, lowers the weighted foot to find the height of the sand, and the ratio of the two readings gives the sand equivalent. The standards listed are EN 933-8 and ASTM D2419.
