What Is the Tamping Rod Used For?
Hand rodding compacts fresh concrete by driving out entrapped air, so that the cubes cast from a mix are dense and give a true strength result. The concrete is placed in the cube mould in layers, and each layer is rodded with strokes spread evenly over its area before the next layer is added and the top is finished level. Using a rod of fixed length and diameter keeps the compacting effort alike from one specimen to the next. The standards listed are IS 516, ASTM C-29, C-31, C-57, C-138, C-192 and AASHTO T-29 & T-23.
