What Is the DCP – Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Used For?
The DCP is driven down through a pavement and the layers beneath it so that the penetration per blow can be plotted against depth; changes in the slope of that plot show where one layer gives way to the next, and the rate of penetration indicates the strength of each layer, which is often correlated with CBR. One person holds the instrument upright, a second raises the hammer to the handle limit and lets it fall onto the anvil, and the technician reads the depth from the 1 m scale after each blow or set of blows.
