What Is the Falling Head Permeability Apparatus Used For?
Fine grained soils let water through too slowly for the outflow to be collected conveniently under a constant head, so the falling head method is used for them. In a falling head test the water level in a standpipe above the sample is allowed to drop as water seeps down through the soil, and the time taken for the level to fall between two marks is recorded. The coefficient of permeability is then worked out from that time, the areas of the standpipe and sample and the sample length, showing how readily water drains through the soil.
