The verification of the degree of compaction can be determined on site using a simple procedure: a part of the compacted soil is removed and weighed, the hole is then refilled with sand from a simple apparatus that records the volume of sand used, and the density of the removed soil is calculated from the results. The complete apparatus consists of one each of a small sand pouring cylinder, 3-litre capacity, fitted with a conical funnel and shutter.

The sand pouring cylinders and calibration cans are made of cast aluminium and precisely machined; the tray is made of plated sheet steel.
This apparatus is used for the in-place determination of the dry density of compact, fine, and medium grained soils, for layers not exceeding 500mm in thickness.

This model is the same as the previous one, but conforms to the BS standard for 100mm, 150mm, and 200mm diameter cylinders.
Accessories: Metal tray, 300mm square and 40mm deep with hole.
