What Is the Sand Pouring Cylinder Used For?
Field density tests show whether compacted fill, embankment or road layers have reached the density specified, by comparing the dry density on site with the laboratory maximum. The operator digs a hole through the layer, weighs the soil removed and keeps a portion for moisture content; the cylinder, filled with sand of known bulk density, is set over the hole on the tray and the shutter opened so the sand fills the hole. The mass of sand run out, less the sand held in the cone, gives the hole volume, and the calibrating container is used beforehand to find the bulk density of the sand. The standards listed are IS 2720 (Part XXVIII) 1966, BS 1377-9 and BS 1924:2.
