What Is the Particle Size Analysis Set, NF Method Used For?

Particles finer than the smallest sieves are sized by sedimentation: larger grains settle through water faster than smaller ones, so the density of a soil suspension at a given depth falls over time in a way that reflects the grading. The soil is dispersed with sodium hexametaphosphate and mixed with the high speed stirrer, then poured into a hydrometer jar and stirred by hand before readings start. The soil hydrometer is read at set times while the glass thermometer records the temperature of the suspension, and the readings give the silt and clay distribution. The standard listed for it is NF P94-057.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of complete NF method sets required.
  • Individual items — any jars, thermometers, stirrers, hydrometers or bottles of dispersing agent to be bought on their own, as each item is sold separately too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials is the NF method set used for?
It is meant for fine-grained material such as silt and clay, giving its particle size distribution where the particles are too fine to be graded on sieves.

What does the set contain?
The set holds a soil hydrometer, two 2500 ml hydrometer jars, a glass thermometer, a hand stirrer, a high speed stirrer with its cup and baffle, and a 1000 g bottle of sodium hexametaphosphate.

What are the hydrometer and thermometer ranges?
The soil hydrometer reads from 0.995 to 1.030 g/ml, and the glass thermometer covers 0 to 50 °C in divisions of 0.5 °C.

What power supply does the stirrer need?
The high speed stirrer, which comes with its own cup and baffle, runs on a 230 V, 50-60 Hz, single phase supply.

Can the items be bought separately?
Yes, every item in the set can be purchased individually, so single jars, hydrometers or bottles of sodium hexametaphosphate can be ordered as replacements.

Which standard is listed for the set?
The standard listed for this particle size analysis set is NF P94-057, the French method for sedimentation analysis of fine soils.
