Unconfined Compression Tester (Motorized) (code EL-STLE-10381) is a screw operated load frame of 5000 kg capacity for unconfined compression tests on soil specimens. A gear box and motor drive give rates of strain of 1.25, 1.5 and 2.5 mm/min on a 230 V single phase A.C. supply, and the frame comes with a pair of cone seatings, a proving ring adaptor, a strain dial gauge bracket and one pair of coning tools for 38 mm samples.

What Is the Unconfined Compression Tester (Motorized) Used For?

The unconfined compression test loads a cylindrical specimen of cohesive soil along its axis, with no lateral support, until it fails, and half of the failure stress is taken as the undrained shear strength of a saturated clay. The specimen is seated between the cone seatings using the coning tools, with a proving ring fitted through its adaptor to measure load and a dial gauge on the bracket to measure axial strain. The motor then drives the screw frame at the selected rate of strain, and load and deformation are read at intervals until the specimen fails or the strain limit for the test is reached.
