Homogenisers with PTFE or glass pestles

Homogenisers with PTFE or glass pestles

Product Code : EL-ELI-11034

Homogenisers with PTFE or glass pestles (code EL-ELI-11034) are homogeniser and pestle sets for breaking up tissue, including especially tough tissue, with a clearance of 0.18 to 0.23 mm between pestle and homogeniser. Both versions come in tapered or cylindrical form: the PTFE pestle has a stainless steel shaft and an inert, elastic, wax-like surface, while the glass pestle has a glass shaft with a ground-glass surface on its working part.

What Are the Homogenisers with PTFE or glass pestles Used For?

Hand homogenisers are used in biology and biochemistry laboratories to break tissue apart and open its cells, so that enzymes, proteins or other cell contents can be extracted for study. The tissue is placed with a little buffer in the homogeniser tube and the pestle is worked up and down and turned; the narrow 0.18 to 0.23 mm gap shears the tissue as it is forced past the pestle. The inert PTFE pestle has a smooth, moisture-rejecting surface, while the ground-glass surface of the glass pestle adds a grinding action. Because pestle and homogeniser are separately exchangeable, a worn or broken part can be replaced on its own.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of homogeniser sets required.
  • Pestle type — PTFE pestle with stainless steel shaft, or glass pestle with ground-glass surface.
  • Form — tapered or cylindrical.

Frequently Asked Questions

What clearance is there between pestle and homogeniser?
The clearance between the pestle and the homogeniser is between 0.18 and 0.23 mm, and it is this narrow gap that shears the tissue during homogenising.

How do the PTFE and glass pestle versions differ?
The PTFE pestle sits on a stainless steel shaft and has a smooth, inert, elastic surface, whereas the glass version has a glass shaft and a ground-glass surface on its cylindrical or tapered part.

Are tapered and cylindrical forms available?
Yes. The homogeniser with PTFE pestle and the homogeniser with glass pestle are each available in a tapered form and in a cylindrical form.

Can a pestle be replaced on its own?
Homogenisers and pestles are made to a defined shape, so either part can be exchanged separately without replacing the complete set.

Is the PTFE pestle heat resistant?
The PTFE pestle is resistant against high temperatures, and its wax-like, moisture-rejecting surface is both inert and elastic.

Which samples are the homogenisers intended for?
Both versions are intended for tough tissue, and the homogeniser with PTFE pestle is described for especially tough tissue.
