What Is the Marcet Boiler Test Setup Used For?
In a closed vessel holding water and its vapour, the two phases settle into equilibrium, and the pressure they exert, the vapour pressure, is specific to the substance and depends on temperature. As students heat the boiler, they read pairs of temperature and pressure values from the digital display and the Bourdon gauge, and plotting these gives the vapour pressure curve of water up to 200 °C. In theory the rise could continue to the critical point, where liquid and vapour can no longer be told apart.
