What Are the Sterile Lab Bags Used For?

Samples taken during food, feed and drug production are sent to the laboratory for microbiological and other testing, and the container must not add organisms or substances of its own. These bags are sterile and used once only. The blue colour is chosen because blue rarely occurs in food, so a torn-off piece that falls into the product stands out. Being free of RNases and DNases matters when samples are tested by DNA or RNA methods, and freedom from pyrogens matters for pharmaceutical work. The operator notes the sample details on the write-on panel, fills the bag and closes it.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of sterile bags required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the bags blue?
The bags and their tear-off closures are coloured blue to prevent the danger of foreign matter in production. Blue rarely occurs in food, so a stray piece stands out clearly.

Can the bags be used more than once?
No. They are designed for single use, so every sample goes into a fresh sterile bag and nothing carries over from an earlier sample.

What does free of RNases, DNases and pyrogens mean?
RNases and DNases are enzymes that break down RNA and DNA, and pyrogens are substances that cause fever. Their absence matters where samples go for molecular testing or pharmaceutical use.

Can sample details be written on the bag?
Each bag has a write-on panel for recording sample details, and the bags are liquid-tight and suitable for food.

Which industries are the bags intended for?
They are intended for the food, animal feed and pharmaceutical industries, where samples are taken during production and sent on for testing.
