What Is the Skid Resistance and Friction Tester Used For?

The pendulum test measures how much grip a surface offers to a sliding rubber, which is used to judge the skid resistance of roads, footways and floors and, in the laboratory, the polished stone value of aggregate. The operator sets the slider to travel over the correct sliding length using the rule, wets the surface from the washing bottle and notes its temperature with the thermometer, then releases the rocker so that the slider sweeps across the surface; the reading on the scale shows the friction. For polished specimens from accelerated polishing tests, the additional PSV scale is used. The standards listed are EN 13036-4, EN 1097-8 and ASTM E103.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of friction testers required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the tester be used on site as well as in the laboratory?
Yes. It is suitable for both site and laboratory applications, and the 6 rubber sliders supplied with it are intended for site use.

Can it be used for polished stone value tests?
Yes, it takes curved specimens from accelerated polishing tests, and an additional scale for tests on polished stone value specimens is supplied with it.

What accessories are supplied?
It comes with the additional PSV scale, 6 rubber sliders, a tool set with case for assembly, a -10 to +110 °C thermometer, a 1 litre washing bottle and a rule for checking sliding length.

What are the key rocker figures?
The rocker weighs 1500 ± 30 g, and the distance between its rocking centre and its centre of gravity is 410 ± 5 mm.

Why are surface temperature and wetting recorded?
Rubber grip changes with temperature and with the presence of water, so the surface is wetted from the washing bottle and its temperature is measured before readings are taken.

Which standards are given for the tester?
The standard listed for it is EN 13036-4, and the standards listed alongside it are EN 1097-8 and ASTM E103.
