What Is the Los Angeles Abrasion Testing Machine Used For?
In the Los Angeles test, a graded aggregate sample is tumbled with steel balls so that the particles are worn by rubbing and broken by impact, much as stone in a road is worn by traffic. The operator loads the sample and the twelve-ball abrasive charge through the opening, fits the dust tight cover and runs the drum for the specified number of revolutions, which the counter shows. The material is emptied into the tray and sieved, and the loss in mass, expressed as a percentage, is the abrasion value. The standards listed are IS 2386 (Part IV), ASTM C 131 and AASHTO T-96.
