What Is the Concrete Cube Mould Used For?

Cubes cast from a sample of fresh concrete are cured and later crushed to find the compressive strength of the mix, so the shape and size of each cube must be true. The mould is set on its base plate, filled with concrete in layers that are compacted by rod or by vibration, and struck off level at the top; once the concrete has set, the cube is taken out for curing. Machined flat faces give a square cube whose faces bear evenly on the platens of the testing machine, so the load is spread over the whole face. The standards listed are BS and IS.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of cube moulds required.
  • Size — the cube size needed, in metric or inch units.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the cube moulds made of?
The moulds are made of cast iron and form a cube-shaped specimen. Each one is supplied complete with a base plate, ready for casting.

How closely are the mould faces machined?
On metric moulds the faces are machined flat to ±0.2 mm and finished to within 0.2 mm; on inch moulds they are machined flat to ±0.01 inch and finished to within 0.01 in.

Can cube moulds be had in both metric and inch sizes?
Yes, the moulds come in a range of sizes in metric and in inch units, so the cube size called for by the test method in use can be chosen.

Why must the faces of a test cube be flat?
The faces of the cube bear against the platens of the compression machine, and flat, square faces spread the load evenly so the strength result is not lowered by uneven contact.

Which standards are listed for the concrete cube mould?
The standards listed for the cube mould are BS and IS, and each mould in the range is supplied with a base plate.
