What Is the Straight Edge Used For?
Many concrete tests depend on a mould or container being filled exactly to its rim, so the surplus concrete standing above the top has to be removed to leave a flat, level surface. After the cube or cylinder mould, or the air meter bowl, has been filled and compacted, the straight edge is laid across the rim and drawn over it to strike off the excess, and it serves the same purpose in slump cone tests. The flat steel bar is 1 in × 12 in.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Straight Edge used for?
It is used to remove excess material when moulding cube and cylinder specimens, and when conducting slump cone and air meter tests on fresh concrete.
What size and material is the straight edge?
It is a flat bar made from steel, measuring 1 in × 12 in, which is 2.5 × 30.4 cm.
Why is excess concrete struck off with a straight edge?
Striking off leaves the concrete level with the rim of the mould or container, so the specimen has a flat top and the container holds a known volume.
