What Is the Consolidation Apparatus Single Gang Used For?
When a saturated clay is loaded, water is slowly squeezed out of its pores and the ground settles over a long period, so foundations on clay are designed from laboratory consolidation tests. The operator trims a 60 mm by 20 mm specimen into the cell between the porous stones, fills the reservoir so that the specimen stays saturated, and adds weights to the 1:1 lever yoke in stages, reading the dial gauge at set times after each load. Settlement plotted against time and against pressure gives the compressibility of the clay and shows whether the deposit has carried heavier loads in the past.
