Demonstration Francis Turbine
Product Code : EL-FMLE-10655
Demonstration Francis Turbine (code EL-FMLE-10655) is a working model of a Francis reaction turbine used to show its design and function and to test its torque, power and efficiency. Water enters through a spiral housing and a distributor of 7 adjustable guide vanes (0 to 20°) onto an 11-blade rotor of 60 mm medium diameter, and a band brake with spring balances loads the turbine, which gives approx. 350 W at 1500 min-1 with 270 L/min at H = 15 m.

What Is the Demonstration Francis Turbine Used For?
A Francis turbine is a reaction machine: part of the water's pressure energy is turned into velocity in the guide vanes and the rest in the runner, so the runner works full of water under pressure. With water supplied at the inlet, students set the guide vane angle, load the wheel with the band brake and read the spring balances, the inlet manometer and the non-contact speed sensor at each load step. From these readings they work out torque, mechanical output and efficiency, plot characteristic curves, compare guide vane settings and draw the velocity triangles at the runner.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of turbine does this model represent?
It represents a Francis turbine, a reaction turbine in which the pressure energy of the water is converted into kinetic energy both in the control device and in the impeller.
How is the turbine loaded and its torque measured?
A band brake loads the wheel, and the brake force read on spring balances gives the turbine torque over a 0 to 9,81 Nm measuring range.
What does adjusting the guide vanes change?
The 7-vane distributor has an angle of attack of 0 to 20°. Changing it alters the angle of incidence of the water and so the impeller speed and the power output.
What output does the turbine give?
It delivers approx. 350 W at 1500 min-1 with a flow of 270 L/min and a head of 15 m, and its maximum speed is 3000 min-1.
Can students see inside while it runs?
Yes. Through the transparent front of the housing, students can watch the water, the Francis wheel and the guide vanes while the turbine runs.
Which instruments are fitted?
Spring balances read the brake force, a manometer shows the water pressure at the turbine inlet over 0 to 4 bar abs., and a non-contact sensor measures speed up to 4000 min-1.
