What Are the Grid Sieves Used For?

Grid sieves have parallel bars instead of square apertures, so they separate particles by thickness rather than by overall size. After the sample has been divided into size fractions on ordinary test sieves, each fraction is shaken by hand on the grid sieve with the matching slot width, and the particles that drop between the bars are thin for their size. Weighing what passed the bars and dividing by the sample mass gives the flakiness index as a percentage. The 14 slot widths run from 50.0 mm to 2.50 mm, and the standards listed are EN 933-3, NF P18-561, UNI 8520-18 and NLT 354.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Grid Sieves used for?
They are used to determine the particle shape of aggregates, including the flakiness index and elongation, by hand sieving each size fraction over parallel bars.

Which slot widths are in the set?
The set of 14 has slot widths of 50.0, 40.0, 31.5, 25.0, 20.0, 16.0, 12.5, 10.0, 8.00, 6.30, 5.00, 4.00, 3.15 and 2.50 mm.

What are the sieves made of?
Each sieve has an aluminium frame and slots formed by stainless steel rods of 5 mm diameter, which give the parallel openings used for shape testing.

Can Grid Sieves be used in a mechanical sieve shaker?
No. They are suitable only for hand sieving, so each fraction is shaken over its grid sieve by hand.

How do grid sieves differ from square-mesh test sieves?
Square-mesh sieves grade particles by overall size, while the parallel bars of a grid sieve let through particles that are thin for their size, which is what the flakiness test measures.

Which standards are listed for the set?
The standards listed are EN 933-3, NF P18-561, UNI 8520-18 and NLT 354, and the 1997 edition of EN 933-3 is the one named.
