Proving Rings

Proving Rings

Product Code : EL-STLE-10950

Proving Rings (code EL-STLE-10950) are steel rings used to measure force, made of special, carefully forged steel and fitted with a dial gauge and anvil on U-brackets that are clamped to the ring body by set screws. They are offered in fourteen capacities, from 25 kgf to 100 kgf (1 kN) at the low end through 5000 kgf (50 kN) to 3000 kN (300 tons).

What Are the Proving Rings Used For?

A proving ring is an elastic steel ring that deflects very slightly, and in proportion to the load, when it is compressed or pulled across its diameter, so the dial reading between gauge and anvil gives the applied force once the ring's load-deflection relation is known. Rings are fitted in the load train of soil and materials testing frames, such as compression, CBR and shear apparatus, and are also used to check the load shown by testing machines. The operator picks a ring whose capacity suits the expected maximum load, from 25 kgf for light work up to 3000 kN, sets the dial to zero and notes readings as loading proceeds.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of proving rings required.
  • Capacity — the ring capacity needed, from 25 kgf to 100 kgf (1 kN) up to 3000 kN (300 tons).

Frequently Asked Questions

What capacities are available?
Capacities run from 25 kgf to 100 kgf (1 kN) through 200, 250, 1000, 2000, 2500, 3000 and 5000 kgf, then 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 kN.

What are the rings made of?
The ring body is made of special steel that is carefully forged, and the dial gauge and anvil are mounted on brackets clamped to it.

How are the dial gauge and anvil attached?
Both are mounted on U-brackets, which are clamped to the ring body by set screws so that they move with the ring as it deflects.

How does a proving ring measure force?
Under load the ring deflects elastically across its diameter and the dial gauge measures this deflection; the reading is turned into force using the ring's known load-deflection relation.

How should a ring capacity be chosen?
Choose a ring whose capacity is above the highest load expected in the test, but not so large that the smaller loads give very small dial readings.

What should an export enquiry include?
For export, include the number of rings and their capacities, the destination as country plus port or city, the delivery terms wanted (FOB, CIF or similar), packing needs and any tender reference.
