What Are the Soil Augers Used For?
Hand augers are turned into the ground to bring up soil from below the surface for logging, classification and laboratory testing during site investigation and soil surveys. The operator chooses the auger for the ground: the open bit Standard or Clay auger for most soils and for cohesive soils, the closed bit Sand auger so that loose granular cuttings stay in the head, or the Mud (Dutch) auger for boggy, root-bound ground. The auger is turned with the T-handle and withdrawn to empty the cuttings, and extensions are added with quick-connect pins as the hole deepens; the adapter allows older threaded extensions to be used.
