Standard Compaction Test

Standard Compaction Test

Product Code : EL-STLE-10937
Quick Answer: A Standard Compaction Test is used to determine soil compaction and increase soil strength for construction projects such as paved roads, dams and embankments. It uses a compaction mould of 100 mm I.D. x 127.3 mm height x 1000 cc volume with collar and base plate, and a 2.6 kgs compaction rammer with a 310 mm controlled fall, to determine the maximum achievable soil density as a reference for further field testing. It is manufactured to IS 2720 (Part VII) standard.

The construction of high load structures such as paved roads, dams, and other construction projects basically relies on the strength and stability of the embankments; a Standard Compaction Test for soil compaction is used to increase the soil strength. The Standard Compaction Test consists of one each of compaction mould steel, 100 mm I.D. x 127.3 mm height x 1000 cc volume, complete with collar and base plate. Loose soil can easily be compacted by using the mechanical equipment to remove any air voids, which helps in densifying the soil so that its dry unit weight is increased. The lab testing determines the maximum density achievable for the soil and uses it as a reference for further field testing. The benefits of soil compaction include increasing the stability of the ground, preventing soil settlement and frost damage, mitigating undesirable settlement of structures such as foundations, paved roads, and piping, and reducing hydraulic conductivity.

The Standard Compaction Test consists of the following items:
The apparatus consists of one each 100 mm I.D. x 127.3mm height x 1000 cc volume of compaction mould steel.
A 2.6 kgs compaction rammer with 310 mm controlled fall.
A base plate and collar.

Standards: IS 2720, (PART-VII)
