Motorized Universal Gyroscope Apparatus
Product Code : EL-DOMLE-10775
Motorized Universal Gyroscope Apparatus (code EL-DOMLE-10775) is used to investigate how gyroscopic torque depends on rotor speed and the rate of precession. Its motor-driven rotor turns horizontally in a frame with two bearing supports and sliding weights on rods along its axis, reaching up to 4000 rpm and precessing at up to 60 rpm on a vertical shaft, and a portable tachometer, stop watch and steel ruler are supplied.

What Is the Motorized Universal Gyroscope Apparatus Used For?
Gyroscopic torque equals the product of the rotor's moment of inertia, its spin speed and the rate of precession, so changing one of these changes the others. Students run the rotor up to a set speed on the speed control and read it with the tachometer, then move the sliding weights to apply a positive or negative torque and time the resulting precession with the stop watch. Repeating this at different speeds and torques gives the plots of torque against precession speed and of rotor speed against torque. With the top assembly removed, they determine the system's moment of inertia and study nutation.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of gyroscope apparatus required.
- Power supply — 230 V 50 Hz, 230 V 60 Hz or 120 V 60 Hz single phase.
Frequently Asked Questions
What relationship does the apparatus investigate?
Students investigate how gyroscopic torque, rotor speed and the rate of precession are related, plotting torque against precessional speed and rotor speed against torque.
How fast do the rotor and frame turn?
The rotor speed goes up to 4000 rpm and the precession speed up to 60 rpm; the frame precesses on a vertical shaft running in bearings.
How are positive and negative torques produced?
Sliding weights on rods fixed to the frame along the rotor axis are moved to give balanced, positive or negative torque conditions; one lot of balancing weights is supplied.
Which measuring instruments come with it?
One portable tachometer for rotor speed, one stop watch for precession speed and one steel ruler are supplied with the apparatus.
Can nutation be studied?
Yes. Removing the top assembly allows the moment of inertia of the system to be found experimentally and nutation to be studied.
How is the operator protected from the spinning rotor?
A guard with a transparent front is provided for safety, so the rotor and frame can be watched while they turn.
