Free and Forced Vibration Apparatus

Free and Forced Vibration Apparatus

Product Code : EL-DOMLE-10772

Free and Forced Vibration Apparatus (code EL-DOMLE-10772) is a trainer for demonstrating the fundamentals of free, damped and forced mechanical vibration on a simple bar-type oscillator mounted on an aluminium profile frame. Coil springs of 0.75, 1.5 and 3.0 N/mm, an oil-filled damper of 5-15 Ns/m and imbalance or displacement exciters running at 0-50 Hz can be placed in any position, and a mechanical drum recorder captures the vibrations.

What Is the Free and Forced Vibration Apparatus Used For?

A vibrating system left alone after a disturbance oscillates at its natural frequency, dies away when damping is present, and, when driven by a periodic force, responds most strongly near resonance, where the excitation frequency matches the natural frequency. Students set up the bar oscillator with a chosen spring and damper, release it to record free and damped vibrations on the drum, and then drive it with the imbalance exciter (inertia force) or the displacement exciter at increasing frequencies. Plotting amplitude and phase against frequency gives the response curves and shows the difference between the two types of excitation.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of trainers required.
  • Data acquisition — whether the optional PC data acquisition unit is wanted.
  • Power supply — 230 V 50 Hz, 230 V 60 Hz or 120 V 60 Hz, single phase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of vibration can be demonstrated?
Free, damped and forced vibrations, including inertia force and displacement excitation, resonance, and amplitude and phase response, all on a bar-type oscillator.

Which springs are supplied?
Three coil springs are supplied, rated at 0.75, 1.5 and 3.0 N/mm, and the spring can be mounted in any position along the oscillator.

How are forced vibrations excited?
An imbalance exciter of 0-1000 mmg and a displacement exciter with a 20 mm stroke provide spring base-point excitation, at frequencies of 0-50 Hz set and displayed on the control unit.

How is damping adjusted?
An oil-filled hydraulic damper gives damped vibrations with an adjustable damping level, its damper constant ranging from 5 to 15 Ns/m.

How are the vibrations recorded?
A mechanical drum recorder with 20 mm/s feed and 100 mm paper width records them, and the optional data acquisition unit shows and analyses the measured values on a PC.
