What Is the Alternator Trainer Used For?
An alternator turns mechanical drive from the engine into electrical current that recharges the battery and supplies the electrical loads, while the voltage regulator controls the field current so that the output voltage stays within limits as speed and load change. With an external regulator, that control unit sits outside the alternator, where students can reach and test it. The instructor starts the motor to drive the alternator, students read the output voltage and current on the built-in meters, and at the test points they practise the usual charging system checks on the alternator, regulator and wiring.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of alternator trainers to be supplied.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does external regulation mean on this trainer?
The voltage regulator is a separate unit wired to the alternator rather than built into it, so students can see and test the regulator and its connections on their own.
What drives the alternator?
A 120 V AC electric motor drives the alternator through a drive belt. The belt is enclosed in a safety shield, and the unit also has a protective cover.
Which instruments are fitted?
A voltmeter and an ammeter are built in, so the charging voltage and current can be read during a demonstration, and test points are provided for diagnosis.
What parts make up the trainer?
It contains an alternator, a driving motor with AC drive, a drive belt, a battery terminal block, a voltage regulator and the associated wiring, arranged with a synoptic diagram.
What size is the unit?
Approximate dimensions are 800 × 600 × 500 mm (L × W × H), with an approximate weight of 65 kg.
