Scotch Yoko Mechanism

Scotch Yoko Mechanism

Product Code : EL-DOMLE-10777

Scotch Yoko Mechanism (code EL-DOMLE-10777) is a hand-operated teaching model of the Scotch yoke, or slotted link mechanism, used to show how the angle turned by a crank, in degrees, relates to the travel of a yoke, in millimetres. A pin on the rotating crank runs in the slot of a sliding yoke coupled to the reciprocating part, so rotary motion becomes alternating linear motion and, as the system is reversible, the other way round.

What Is the Scotch Yoko Mechanism Used For?

The Scotch yoke turns steady rotation into reciprocating motion without a connecting rod: the crank pin slides along the yoke's slot while pushing the yoke back and forth, which gives the yoke simple harmonic motion. Students turn the crank handle through set angles and compare each crank angle with the distance the yoke has travelled, then plot yoke displacement against crank angle. Driving the yoke instead of the crank shows that the mechanism also works in reverse, which is why it is described as reversible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Scotch Yoko Mechanism demonstrate?
It demonstrates the relative motion between a crank that rotates, measured in degrees, and a yoke that translates, measured in millimetres.

How does the Scotch yoke convert motion?
The reciprocating part is directly coupled to a sliding yoke with a slot that engages a pin on the rotating part, so rotation of the crank produces the alternating linear motion of the piston.

Is the mechanism reversible?
Yes. It can convert the linear motion of the slider into rotational motion as well as rotation into linear motion, so it is a reversible system.

How is the model operated?
The model is hand operated through a crank handle and is laid out on a base, measuring approximately 500 × 300 × 200 mm and weighing 7 kg.

What is another name for the Scotch yoke?
It is also known as a slotted link mechanism, a reciprocating motion mechanism that is an example of the slider-crank type, used to convert between rotary and linear motion.
