Exhaust Gas Calorimeter
Product Code : EL-TELE-10695
Exhaust Gas Calorimeter (code EL-TELE-10695) is a counter flow, water-cooled heat exchanger that is connected to a multi-cylinder test engine to find how much heat the exhaust gas carries away, a figure needed for the engine's energy balance. Exhaust gas passes around small vertical finned tubes in an insulated stainless steel chamber while cooling water flows through them, and 4 temperature sensors and a flow meter feed a measuring amplifier with digital displays.

What Is the Exhaust Gas Calorimeter Used For?
Only part of the fuel energy burned in an engine becomes useful work; much of the rest leaves in the cooling water and the exhaust gas, and an energy balance sets out these shares. The calorimeter measures the exhaust share: hot gas from the test engine is led in through the exhaust gas hose and gives up its heat to cooling water in the finned tubes, while the operator reads the two exhaust gas and two cooling water temperatures and the water flow rate. The heat taken up by the water, worked out from its flow rate and temperature rise, gives the heat carried by the exhaust gas. The chamber is opened to clean the finned tubes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why measure the heat in an engine's exhaust gas?
Determining the heat lost in the exhaust gas is an essential step in drawing up the energy balance of an internal combustion engine, alongside the useful power and the heat taken by the cooling water.
How does the calorimeter take heat from the exhaust?
Exhaust gas flows around small vertical finned tubes inside an insulated stainless steel chamber, while cooling water flows inside the tubes in counter flow and absorbs the heat.
What do the instruments measure?
Four temperature sensors, two each, read 0 to 600 °C on the exhaust gas side and 0 to 200 °C on the cooling water side, and a flow meter reads the cooling water flow up to 160 L/h.
What are the heat exchange areas?
The heat exchange area is 0.944 m² on the exhaust gas side and 0.141 m² on the water side of the finned pipe heat exchanger.
What services does it need?
It needs a cold water connection and a drain and a 230 V, 50 Hz, 1 phase electrical supply, and it is connected to the engine with an exhaust gas hose.
Can the finned tubes be cleaned?
Yes. The insulated stainless steel chamber can be disassembled, giving access for cleaning the finned tubes that carry the cooling water.
